Juarez Machado was born in 1941 in the city of Joinville, Brazil. In 1966, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he began working in a variety of different media. While he was always predominantly a painter, he also began to try working in the varied fields of engraving, illustrating, scene design, sculpture, and sketching.
The figures Machado paints and draws are usually depicted from odd angles, or positioned into odd angles. Rather than drawing naturalistic forms, his goal is to create a sense of motion by bending the human form, forcing the viewer to see them as moving through time. In works like Tango Over the Piano, for example, this technique is particularly effective.
