M.C. Escher's life and work remains an enigma to most - to the extent that few people even know what the "M" and the "C" stand for. Maurits Cornelis Escher, as he is properly (but not commonly) known, was born in 1898 in Friesland in the northern part of the Netherlands. A poor student, Escher experimented with art in his teenage years, and even dabbled in architecture, poetry and literature.

Escher always adhered to a certain style that would eventually become his trademark. In his early 20s, Escher traveled to Italy and Spain, where he was greatly affected by the new and surprising landscapes he encountered.
Escher always had an interest in architecture (he thought of pursuing an architectural career at one point) and his fascination with building forms is reflected in his work. During his years in Italy (where he married and started a family), Escher's work became quite popular and he garnered a significant amount of recognition. He was able to sell prints regularly throughout most of his career, and unlike many great artists, he lived rather comfortably.
M.C. Escher's prints, with their vertigo-inducing perspectives and intertwined animal shapes, have long been favorites of art lovers and novices alike.
