Wassily Kandinsky - Artist Biography
Kandinsky is widely regarded as the esteemed theorist and originator of abstract painting in the 20th century. Back in 1910, Wassily Kandinsky had the distinct pleasure of viewing an Islamic art exhibition in Munich. He was immediately drawn to the decorative style and the lack of human images, something that was uncommon in most European art of that age. This art show proved to be a catalyst in Kandinsky's career, giving birth to his abstract works.
Six years later, Kandinsky connected with the Berlin Secession, finally becoming a strong figure in the Art Nouveau movement. Kandinsky strove to merge Art Nouveau with Russian folk art, employing vibrant colors and an engaged insurgence of stripes, strokes, shapes and splashes. In addition to being an influential painter, Kandinsky's writing was also well respected, making him to be a popular commentator on art of all ages.
It is important to know that Kandinsky had a passion for music. He was well trained in both piano and cello, and many art historians believe that Kandinsky's paintings have a musical quality. Kandinsky stated that when he listens to a classical piece of music, he envisions a particular color for each instrument, allowing them to mingle and coexist within a single composition.
This passion is extremely evident in the majority of Kandinsky's works, especially in paintings such as "Resonance Multicolore" and "Hommage to Grohmann." These works are greatly respected and highly indicative of Kandinsky's unique style.
