Thomas Mcknight - Artist Biography
Thomas McKnight is an artist who stands out both for his striking works and for the manner in which they unabashedly buck the trends of his times. He was born in Kansas in 1941, and was exposed primarily to neo-expressionism and pop art during the first three decades of his life. His first works were noticed by critics in the 1970s, a decade largely given to minimalism. The bight colors and exquisite details of his work are not intentionally reactionary--they are simply his own unique vision.
McKnight studied art in college, and spent some time in Paris pursuing his interest. His plan was to be a museum curator or teach art, but eventually he gave up the idea and settled down to work in advertising. It was not until he took a trip to Greece in 1970 and really thought about the fact that no famous or critically lauded artists were producing the type of art he really liked, that he decided to attempt to be an artist full-time.
Since then, McKnight has been incredibly prolific. His works range from the grand (like Hyannisport) to the much simpler, like Desert Patio. He has also painted a number of Mediterranean vistas, all of which make lovely and bright decorative elements.
McKnight has also painted a number of still lifes and uses his signature color palette to render different rooms like Sportsman's Study and Yellow Music Room.
