Picasso's Blue Period

Born on October 25th, 1881 in the Malaga region of Spain, Pablo Picasso was exposed to art from an early age. His father, an academic painter named Jose Ruiz Blanco, encouraged Picasso to draw even as a child. In 1895, Picasso and his family moved to Barcelona, where the young artist would begin his professional training.

rtyr Patricio Clito Ruiz Picasso. Born in a middle class family Picasso, Son of Jose Ruiz Blaso and Maria Picasso Lopez started learning painting from early childhood. His father was a painter who specialized in depiction of birds. He was a professor of art at School of Arts and curator at a museum. According to Picasso’s mother his first word was “Piz” a Spanish word which means pencil in English. May be that was the clue for his passion and clear indication of being a future artist.
Picasso showed interest for painting in very early stage of his life. His father started giving him formal training in oil painting at the age of seven. His paintings were largely influenced by Spanish art. Picasso’s early life depicts his keen interest toward art. Picasso’s family shifted to Barcelona after death of his seven years old sister, Conchita. Ruiz transferring himself to School of Fine Arts at Barcelona persuaded the institution to allow Picasso to sit for entrance exam. To utter surprise of jury, 13 years old Picasso completed the exam within a week whereas it takes a month for other students. At the age of Thirteen, Picasso created his first oil painting, a portrait of his father, mother and sister, kneeling in front of an altar in a church. At the age of fifteen, he started selling his paintings at a small scale. The tenure at Barcelona shaped his artistic skills .In the year 1897, Picasso was sent to most prestigious school of Arts named Madrid’s Royal Academy at San Fernado for his advanced learning. Picasso hated formal instructional training and he didn’t show much interest in classes. Picasso started skipping classes soon after enrollment. However, at Madrid Picasso held attraction toward works of Goya, Zurbaran and El Greco.
At Madrid, He founded an art magazine with his friend Asis Soler named as “Arte Joven”(Young Art). He was political cartoonist and Soler was responsible for articles. The first edition published on March 31, 1901.Only five issues of the magazine was published .Picasso stayed at Mardid until June 1901. As a young passionate artist he made his first visit to Paris which is desired destination of young artists.
His art work rarely missed any 20th century movement. His art form had peculiarity in terms of color and sketches which depicted his emotions. In his 20’s Picasso changed his paintings to palate from earth toned colors. Picasso’s Blue period (1901-1905) consisted of painting in blue and blue green, which was a depressing phase of his life due to suicide of his best friend .Then came rose period around 1905, shows romance and lightning of emotions through rose color tones. During 1907, Picasso and his friend Georges introduced new form of painting named cubism, which was based on geometric terms using bright colors. During World War I his paintings were political and militant. And after World War II his paintings were gentle.
Picasso married twice in his entire life and he had four children from three women. Picasso created 22,000 works of art in his life span of 91 years which includes sculpture, mosaic, graphic arts and stage design. He spent last years of his life on sketching and he finished 347 sketches despite of his poor health conditions. He died in France on April 8, 1973.
