Pablo Picasso - Artist Biography
Born on October 25th, 1881 in the Malaga region of Spain, Pablo Picasso was exposed to art from an early age. His father, an academic painter named Jose Ruiz Blanco, encouraged Picasso to draw even as a child. In 1895, Picasso and his family moved to Barcelona, where the young artist would begin his professional training.
The Early Life of Picasso
In Barcelona, Picasso enrolled in La Lonja, the local academy of fine arts. He also began to visit Horta de Ebro in 1898 and 1899, and began to associate with other artists at the Els Quatra Gats caf?round the same time. This period of collaboration would have a profound affect on his development as an artist.
Picasso exhibited his works for the first time in 1900, at a show in Barcelona. Shortly thereafter, he traveled to Paris for the first time--a city he would return to many times over the next few years. Picasso eventually decided to settle in Paris, and in 1904, he packed up his things and shifted his operations to the French capital. Picasso's relocation to Paris allowed him to come into contact with (and befriend) artists like Gertrude Stein, Max Jacob and Berthe Weill.
Picasso's career as an artist would continue for many decades, and over the course of his life he experimented with many artistic forms. From his "Blue" and "Rose" painting periods to his experiments with Cubism, Synthesism, sculpture and even ballet and theater productions, Picasso was never afraid to apply his talents in new ways.
