Maxfield Parrish - Artist Biography
American artist Maxfield Parrish was born in 1870, and is considered by many critics to be one of the world's most truly unique artists. He considered himself to be partly a traditionalist and partly an inventor, and did not limit himself with regard to sources of inspiration, as did many of his peers. Parrish's eye for detail and color are truly as original as his style.
Parrish employed a very particular and personal painting method. It consisted of putting several coats of a transparent oil on his canvases, which he would alternate with varnish over stretched paper. This is the reason for the signature luminous quality that fans associate with his work. Many people feel that they are looking through a window or through the clouds into a fantasy world.

intensified by the fairy tale characters and images that were popular subjects for Parrish. Around the turn of the century he concentrated on illustrating children's books, and many of his mature works feature the characters he encountered while submerged in children's classics. There is a decidedly sensual twist to some of his renderings, though others are pure innocence and glee. Unexpectedly, Parrish turned to nudes during the 1920s. Then from the 1930s through his death in 1966, he mainly concentrated on calendar landscapes.
