Jack Vettriano - Artist Biography

Jack Vettriano was born in 1951 in rural Scotland. At the age of 21, his artistic side was awakened by a watercolor set given to him by his girlfriend as a birthday gift. This gift inspired him to turn his focus from his job as a mining engineer towards painting, beginning a love affair with the canvas and brush. Remarkably, Vettriano was self-taught, demonstrating his dedication to and love of art.

It took over 14 years of perfecting his discipline before Vettriano felt comfortable displaying his work to a public audience. Much to his surprise, his works were immediately met with a great deal of praise. In the summer of 1989, he offered two of his paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibit, and both of these works were accepted and sold on the very first day. From the beginning, Vettriano's paintings were met with an enthusiastic response from art dealers and curators, making him one of the most beloved Scottish painters of our time.
