Guy Buffet - Artist Biography
Guy Buffet was born in 1943 and began his artistic career early, creating sketches on the tablecloths of the Buffet family restaurant in Paris. Fans of his work still see that youthful spirit and exuberance in the work he produces today. Buffet had years of formal training in the best art schools of France, including the Beaux Arts de Toulon and the Academic de Peinture de la Ville de Paris--yet his playful pieces are alive with bright colors and never reflect an obvious influence of academia.
Buffet also served for several years with the Franch Navy. His tour of duty took him to many of the most exotic ports of the world--Tahiti, Hong Kong, Japan, Lebanon, Vietnam and Martinique--which strongly influenced his work. He was ultimately named the official artist of the French Navy based on the merit of the paintings form this era of his life. After leaving the Navy, Buffet returned to the Hawaiian islands and settled down in Maui.
Since then, Buffet's work has been categorized by a vibrant optimism and general joy with life. Pieces like Jojo's Far Niente, Quartet, and Saint Remy Marketplace reflect a celebration of the lovely things that happen every day. Buffet has also produced works of vibrant and breathtaking movement like Finish Line, a depiction of the final moments of the Tour de France bicycle race.
