Edvard Munch - Artist Biography
The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch is perhaps most famous for his work The Scream. Munch lived from 1863-1944, and his most famous work was done within the span of a decade--the 1890s--in the Expressionist vein. But like most great artists, Munch explored other styles at other points in his career, and you can also see strains of Impressionism and a great deal of the Symbolist ideology in a number of his works.
Much of Munch's work deals with dark themes. Illness, grief, and death figured heavily in his early life, and he returned to these ideas in paintings that resonate with viewers just as strongly today. Throughout his life, Munch was constantly productive, but parted only reluctantly with his works, which he often called his children.
