Don Li-Leger - Artist Biography
Don Li-Leger was born and raised in British Colombia, and has painted since childhood. Initially, his primary subjects were the birds and animals he saw around home, but extensive trips to Asia and to North American wildlife sanctuaries extended the range of his vision and the scope of his subject matter. While his focus remains the natural world, the emotional resonance of Li-Liger's works has increased as he has gotten older and formed more meaningful connections with the world around him through his family and travels.
One of his most celebrated series of painting is called "Oriental Visions." In these works, Li-Leger experimented with broad areas of rolled-on saturated color and various Eastern images. He also uses both acrylic paint and gels to get the textures he wants from the paint. Frequently, there are also layers of transparent color or rice paper worked into the canvas for a layered effect, much like collage.
In some paintings, Li-Leger uses calligraphy taken from ancient Japanese and Chinese poems. This calligraphy comes from a variety of sources, most of which he has discovered in the course of his studies in Asian painting, travels, and philosophy. Li-Leger's work has been featured in exhibitions all over the world, including the prestigious Leigh-Yawkey Woodson traveling exhibit.
Li-Leger's works vary from the elegant and simple like Persimmons I to the multilayered and complex like East Meets West I.
