Amedeo Modigliani - Artist Biography
Amedeo Modigliani was born in 1884 in Italy and began to study painting seriously as a teenager. As most serious artists did at the turn of the twentieth century, he moved to Paris. He attended the Academie Colarossi and met such artists as Cezanne, Gauguin, and Toulouse-Lautrec. They had a strong influence on his early work, as is immediately evident in his Pre-WWI sketches and canvases.
From 1909 to 1914 he concentrated on sculpture, but he also occasionally drew and painted. The majority of his well-known paintings were made from 1916 to 1919. Many of them are female portraits, ranging from relatively simple nude sketches such as Cariatide and Seated Nude to lovely portraits like Woman with Red Hair or Gypsy with Baby. Modigliani died in Paris on January 24, 1920.
