Alexander Calder - Artist Biography

Alexander Calder is one of the most influential American artists of the last century. His most famous work is primarily sculpture in the Abstract Kinetic style, but he also created a number of famous abstract paintings. Calder's sculptures are unmistakable, as they are epic works constructed of wires, twisted into elaborate and evocative figures in space. Most of them are designed to be placed outside, as they require so much space--and many of his famous mobiles also rely on the natural movement of air to bring them to life.

Calder was profoundly influenced by Mondrian, and briefly changed his focus to abstract painting. He ultimately decided that he preferred sculpting, but his horizons were ever-expanding artistically. Throughout his career, Calder was greatly fascinated with the circus. One of his most famous works is entitled The Circus, and is a miniature circus made of wire performers that perform acrobatics, walk tightropes, dance, and so on.
