Like many of the most important artists of the last century, Gustav Klimt was quite a controversial figure throughout his career. Born in 1862 in Vienna, Austria, Klimt was the son of an engraver. He trained to be an artist at the State School of Applied Arts, which gave him the tools to become a professional artist at a relatively young age.

Klimt's success did not lead to stasis, however - on the contrary, he became more and more experimental with his work. In 1894, Klimt painted murals for Vienna University, which were paid for by the state. The murals were quite revolutionary for the time, and their strange imagery and style were criticized by many people in the community. In reaction to the criticism, Klimt helped to found the Secession: a group of artists who sought to work against the accepted artistic norms of the time.
Klimt's reactionary practices would continue throughout his career, and he would go on to experiment with erotic imagery and complex symbols in his paintings. His landscapes were quite unusual but nonetheless important, and his style continued to evolve throughout his career.
