Camille Pissarro - Artist Biography
Camille Pissarro lived from 1830-1903, and is one of the most important figures in French Impressionism (though he was in fact born in the Caribbean to a Jewish father and Spanish-Dominican mother). Pissarro was sent to Paris for school when he was still young, and adopted France immediately as his home. Pissarro also committed himself to art, carrying a sketchbook with him everywhere and attempting to capture scenes from everyday life as realistically as he could.
When he began painting seriously in his 20s, Pissarro found he was not interested in the style of the "Masters." His passion was light, and Pissarro was to become famous for the way that he captured light embracing every facet of his subject.
